Valley Fig/Cook’s Country Photo Contest Entry

Hi all-

Just a quick note to ask for your help in helping me win a contest to go see a filming of one of my most FAVORITE shows: Cook’s Country!

They have partnered with Valley Figs to have a fig photo contest and they will select a winner from the entries. You were originally supposed to post on instagram and then garner “likes.” They are also on the link below, and people can go in and enter an email and vote for the one they like best. I foolishly wasn’t thinking about it that much when I made my initial Instagram post, and didn’t include that many hashtags. So now I’m trying to focus on getting votes on the link below. Just came across yet another fantastic piece from Food52 (have I mentioned how much I love their site? Great info, and just adore their photography); this time about recipes to reduce kitchen waste. There are 30 recipes here to give you some tasty ideas on how to reduce food waste in the kitchen.

We’d love for you to try out some of the recipes and let us know what you think (and if you have some other ideas for ways to reduce food waste in the kitchen) here on the blog. (I’m particularly looking forward to trying the apple peel bourbon recipe. I am from the South after all so I do like my bourbon!)

Happy Earth Day 2015!

Happy Earth Day everyone! We hope you can take a moment on this day to think about what you can do, as both an individual and as part of a community, to help ensure the earth continues to remain a natural and healthy world for many years to come.

In thinking about what both of us has done over the past year, I (Carol) have begun composting regularly and meal planning for the week on Sundays. Karen has reduced her waste by 10%, and she did that by buying less, meal planning, and using the Debbie Meyer green bags (she loves them SO much, she should be a spokesman for them!  http://www.amazon.com/Debbie-Meyer-GreenBags-Freshness-Preserving-5127799/dp/B00I4V1U06). She estimates that she saved $1200 last year. That’s a great vacation right there!

 

As part of Earth Week this week, I participated in my first Twitter chat on Monday and it was focused on food waste (wonderfully set up and moderated by Green is Universal, @GreenIsUni). Let me just say that it was INTENSE! Holy cow! But I learned so much and have some great information that I wanted to pass along to you. Below are some of the links:

And we just thought this was the cutest!


I also found a few cool new apps to that you might want to take a look at. FoodKeeper is from the USDA and Cornell University and will tell you how long an item from the supermarket will keep in the refrigerator or freezer. Fresh Food helps you find farmers markets that are closest to you.

And finally, here are few points I learned from Green is Universal on twitter these past few days:
1. More than 6 billion lbs of fresh produce go unharvested or unsold each year.
2. Food waste is the single largest component of solid waste reaching landfills & incinerators in the U.S.
3. Eggs are actually safe to eat 3-5 weeks after the date on the carton.
4. We throw out more food than plastic, paper, metal or glass.

1st Anniversary of First Books

We can’t BELIEVE it was a year ago that we received the first advanced copies of Every Bite! It was beyond thrilling to reach our goal and be published authors, writing about something we believe in 150%.

“Women Stars of Food & Wine”- Downtown Seattle

On Sunday, February 8th, we were honored to take part in the 2nd Annual “Women Stars of Food & Wine” event. Organized by the Women’s Funding Alliance, a local group that aims to champion causes and to provide leadership for the lives of women and girls in Washington state, it was held on the 73rd and 74th (or maybe it was the 74th and 75th!) floors of the Columbia Center in downtown Seattle. The event paired up amuse-bouches from women chefs with wines from local women sommeliers. We served small salmon cakes with vegetable salsa from the cookbook, and we were paired with SuLei Cellars out of Walla Walla (link below). They poured their delicious 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, their 2012 Dena Rae Tuscan style blend and their 2011 Roller Girl Jammer Red.

Karen did a wonderful job making up 300 mini salmon cakes and they were dee-licious. We recognized people coming back for seconds! They were apparently quite popular!

It was an amazing opportunity to showcase Every Bite and as women, we were so thrilled to meet other women chefs, sommeliers, and entrepreneurs, as well as supporting the wonderful mission of the WFA. The facility was beyond cool, and is chance you’re not going to come across too often. It’s an incredible view of the city.
I (Carol) had never been to the top of the Columbia Center, and when I told a good friend of mine about the event, she said “oh they have the best women’s bathroom in all of Seattle. I was there for something about 15 years ago, and the thing I remember most was the incredible bathroom!” When I told Karen, she was like “heck yea it is!” So pardon the fact that there is a picture of the bathroom below- I just couldn’t help it! It was quite the view for sure!!

Recent Seattle Events for Every Bite

We recently did a variety of promotional events for Every Bite a few weeks ago (3 events in 4 days; on top of our main, regular jobs), and while they were all wonderful experiences, we were exhausted by the end!

One event was the Tom Douglas Cookbook Social in downtown Seattle. We really lucked into participating, as we found out about the event late, but were thrilled to be a part of it and had a great time! Here are some photos from that event:

Thanksgiving and Upcoming Promotional Events

Karen and I would first like to wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving filled with family, friends, much love, and delicious food!

We have a couple of fantastic book promotion opportunities coming up this week after Thanksgiving and we are SUPER excited about them!

We are definitely most excited about our participation in the “Cookbook Social at the Palace Ballroom” on Tuesday, December 2nd, and sponsored by Tom Douglas Events. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to be at this event and cannot thank the lovely people there enough. There will be several authors there with tasty bites to share as well, so you should definitely stop by if you can. Here is the event link:

And then on Friday, December 5th in the Arnold Building of main campus, we will be at the Fred Hutchinson Center Annual Winter Craft Fair from 9-3 (Karen will be there from 9-1), where we will be signing copies of Every Bite. If you or someone you knows works at the Hutch, be sure and stop by. It’s a great event where a portion of the proceeds go to the SCCA (Seattle Cancer Care Alliance) Patient Family Services Fund. Open to all , so if you work nearby or are a Hutch employee, come join us for some holiday cheer!

IFBC 2013, Seattle. Some First Thoughts….

I signed up so long ago. In a galaxy far far away.. (ha! had to randomly throw in a little Star Wars there. I DO have a Vader and Stormtrooper flash drive after all!)

Okay okay, so it was really only 5 months, but still: it seemed to take forever! And after months of patiently waiting for what I had heard was one of the best food blogging conferences in the country, the event was finally here.
And with the event arriving, came wonderful speakers and presentations; who all gave me such great information, tips, and help with how to improve on my photography and blogging experience. It’s been such an overall positive and beneficial experience for me, that it’s hard to sort it all out right now. My mind is just racing around with so many new ideas and things I need to do! So while a more in depth blog post and additional photos will be coming by the end of the week, for now, I just want to throw out a few comments/feelings I have from it so far:
First of all, I would like to thank Sheri and Barney at Foodista for putting on a fantastic event. I can only imagine the long hours that went into making this a success. And a smashing success it has been! Wonderful, wonderful job.

The food throughout has been fantastic, and the people have been so fun, welcoming, and supportive. It has been a really great environment to learn and grow as a blogger and photographer. The most entertaining session by far had to be the Food Photography and Cooking Demo. Andrew Scrivani, Chef John, Jeffery, and Brian all teamed up to do a sushi demonstration. They were awesome! Great interaction with each other and with the audience. I can see why they were “back by popular demand” and hope they are back next year too!

Amazing experience, and one that was well worth the wait. As I said, more to come later this week!
I’m already looking forward to next year!

Cookbook Update and Photos

Just wanted to update everyone that the cookbook is still plugging along. We haven’t received a publishing date yet (not that we’re chomping at the bit to get it out or anything!), but as soon as we finish up this 2nd round of edits that we’re working on with them, which include adding in the photos, things will move onto marketing, and that’s when we’ll get a publish date.

In the meantime, Karen and I got together this past week to take a few additional photos and to redo a few that I was just not happy with. Here are a couple of pictures that didn’t make the cut of the final photos to send to the publishers. Hopefully you still find them mouth-watering and are looking forward to the “official” photo and a recipe to go along with!

Cookbook Update and Some Other Stuff…

Hi all-

Early this week, we got an email from Robert at Vanguard with the 1st copy of the manuscript to proof! To say we were thrilled is an understatement! I (Carol) was particularly taken a back seeing the title/author page and the copyright page. It’s finally becoming really real and is starting to look like a cookbook!

We also got a first idea for the cover for the book. It’s not really what Karen and I had in mind, but we’ll work with them and will get if figured out. We’ll have the first draft to them by next weekend and will move on from there. Not until we’re done with the proofing and it moves onto the marketing department do we get a release date. Which is what we’re particularly excited for! Hopefully just in time for the holidays!

I also came across a couple of interesting food tidbits you might enjoy:
